The prevalence of diabetes rose by nearly 26 percent between 2001 and 2007, according to the study. The study claims that California is falling short of targets for obesity and diabetes set by Healthy People 2010 - a national health-promotion and disease-prevention plan.

Rhythm Pharmaceuticals Inc., a startup focused on obesity and diabetes treatments, had closed a $40 million Series A financing, funded by MPM Capital and Third Rock Ventures, both of Boston, as well as New Enterprise Associates of Maryland.
